Emerging Technologies & Their Social Impact
This course aims to focus on exploring the emerging technologies conceptually and addressing their social impact on individuals as well as societies. They are the technologies that are new or unusual for all but one generation on earth, the Generation Z. Those who were born between 1997 and 2012 are assumed to be Gen Z. This is the second “digital” generation after Gen Y (“millennials”) and are more advanced on using digital technologies.
The emerging technologies on focus are artificial intelligence, robotics, internet of things, blockchain, cryptocurrency, singularity, big data analysis and social media. Each technology will be covered in one or two consecutive sessions. The sessions will focus on not only the makings of the technology but also its impacts based on the practical and/or possible issues (e.g., how big data analysis can be used to solve traffic problem in Istanbul). Moreover, three most important global digital strategies (i.e., Digital Transformation, Industry 4, Society 5) will be summarized and how emerging technologies map with them will be explained.
The course will run in English and aims to be carried out in an interactive manner encouraging participants to comment, think, imagine, and reflect on them. After all, they will be the ones who will use those technologies to shape the future; their era!
