Ayşe Esra Şirin completed her BA in Bogazici University as a history major. She received her MA in Byzantine Studies in the same institution. She is currently a PhD student at Brown University, History Department. Her work focuses on the cultural meeting zones of the Mediterranean in Late Antique and medieval periods. She specializes on the Western and Eastern perceptions of legendary saints, especially Saint Nicholas. She taught history in various academic institutions as well as in high schools. She has been a volunteer of the Turkish Cultural Foundation for eight years. After she finished her studies in the United States, she started working in the Community Involvement Program in Robert College and oversaw the running of numerous social projects led by RC students.
